My wii has black vertical lines or "rips" on the main menu, in games, basically everywhere, i also get a green sparkling grid pattern appear during gameplay, has anyone else noticed any of these glitches? I thought the black lines on the screen thescreen were caused by condensation on the tube due to the fact my wii is kept in the spare room where its not that warm but that was not the case, i swapped tellys and noticed the glitches were still there!! One of my friends off here sent me a message last week saying his wii had broke and to change his wii code and when i asked him how it broke he replied describing the same problem i had noticed, is this somekind of virus transmitted via the internet cos i know none of these glitches were present when i got my wii in december and they seem to of appeared in the last few werks since my wii has been connected to the internet!

It's me that Skull Kid is referring to. I sent off my Wii to be fixed and got sent back a replacement console. (Any friends of mine who haven't noticed will need to change my console number on their Wiis to stay in contact). I don't think it's a virus as I don't use my wii to surf the net, only to keep in contact and swap miis with the people on my friends list.

Possibly a faulty GPU. If it's under warranty you should call up Nintendo, and have it replaced.

If you have the wii connect thingy running overnight, it heats up the GPU and damages it. It's a known problem.

Turn your Wii off at night to prevent this tbh.

Whatever it is nintendo had no explanation as to what caused it, and when i first rang up to report the fault they made out they'd never encountered a similar problem but i know for a fact celery had reported the same fault about a week earlier!!

This does seem to be quite a common problem. Over on wiichat.com in the forum relating to hardware issues there is a sticky thread about faulty wii hardware where several posters have had the same trouble with their console. It seems no-one has managed to work out yet quite what the fault is or what causes it. Sending off your console for repairs always results in receiving a brand new replacement console from Nintendo but no explanation as to what had gone wrong. All I can add is that the problem starts as a minor glitch and gets increasingly worse...my menu screens had literally hundreds of 'rips' before I gave up on it. (I didn't want to lose all my miis!)
