But! That PPU professor may have had solid evidence to back up his belief, so maybe I shouldn't put him off so quickly. Thing is, no matter what evidence you toss at me, I still think this whole 2012 thing is something people can talk about when they're bored, and nothing more.

@Robby - We've had earthquakes since the earth was 2 days old, and the earth has been changed many times because of these and other disasters. The quake in Chile was only .7 less than the largest quake in history, so these aren't just normal occurences.
The reason people began believing the world will end in 2012 is the Mayan calender. As advanced as their civilization was for its time, they weren't all that smart about time keeping. Their calender was a tower that had windows facing important heavenly bodies on important dates. Because of structural problems, lack of materials, laziness, boredom, invasion, or whatever, the last window in built the tower aligns with some heavenly body, probably the sun or Venus, on the winter solstice in 2012. This was not, and is not (as the tower still exists, and has been featured in a couple movies, including one Indiana Jones movie) a warning of the apocalypse, simply a stupid idea for a calender that was only followed through to a certain extent. After all, you can't build an infinitely tall tower.
I do know one thing...come 2012, a whole bunch of people are gonna crap themselves for no reason. The only thing that will happen is people themselves causing chaos due to speculation. Rioting, mass suicide, cult like behavior...*sigh*.
