Template for basic 'exploding' enemy. Breakdown:
Group 1: The 'whole' enemy shape/shapes, which will have the bulk of the health
Group 2:(set to activate after, destroy with preceding, etc.) contains objects that will have whatever 'explosion' weapon effects you want. I think it's preferable to use small objects that will not be visible and do not impact the enemy's design.
Group 3: (set to destroy with preceding) A reduced version of the main shape, which should be designed to break *immediately* after the the main shape is destroyed. Should have the minimum amount of health, typically 1 - 3. You might go as high as 5 if they'll be up against a particularly fast firing weapon.

Also... the quick and dirty way to make a Group3 for this type of enemy is to copy the main shape, nudge it over once with the d-pad (right for horizontal levels, up for vertical typically), send it to the correct group and make the necessary changes. :)
This doesn't work 100%, though... you have to keep in mind what direction the bullets will be hitting them the majority of the time. That's really what you should base the positioning on.

(100% of the time I mean)
Use common sense when making effects, too. Too big or too slow or hard to see and it might hit the player's ship. It's also a good idea to limit the rate of fire as there's always a slim chance that last enemy fragment will somehow survive.
That said, a lot of crazy stuff is possible. If you can't get all you want out of one effect, copy the 'exploder' object and combine it with another. :)
