Joystiq [Nintendo], December 16, 2009:
The Wiimote has been used for plenty of non-gaming needs, including tidying up the house and controlling robots. Even the US military got in on the action, using the Wiimote to defuse bombs in Iraq. And let's not forget the groundbreaking work done by Johnny Chung Lee -- a man who just happens to have inspired the creation of the setup you see above.

See, a team of scientists in Luxemburg (via Wired) figured out that using the sensor-filled gutty-works of the Wiimote would -- through some tinkering -- be a good way to measure water evaporation. See, this type of measurement usually requires sensors that can cost up to $500 a piece, making the $40 Wiimote quite the attractive alternative. This has applications outside of just measuring water evaporation, the team said -- including measuring the speed at which a structure collapses.

Joystiq [Nintendo], December 15, 2009:
Capcom's let loose an avalanche of new media for upcoming Tatsunoko vs Capcom. We've got something for everyone, including some piping-hot screens from the screenshot oven (screens are always baked, you know), concept art and even a pair of new gameplay trailers. If you've ever wanted to witness a robotic girl pummel someone with a broom, well, head past the break and soak it all in.

Capcom schools Monster Hunter Tri rookies, unsure about Wii Speak for USCapcom schools Monster Hunter Tri rookies, unsure about Wii Speak for US

Joystiq [Nintendo], November 19, 2009:

Capcom held a university-themed event Tuesday evening in San Francisco to introduce newcomers to the Monster Hunter universe in the runup to next spring's North American release of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii. We'd already played the game at previous events, so we knew what to expect: Monster Hunter, looking nice (especially the large monsters) but not as nice as it could have on the PS3.

After spending some time with the three-level, English-localized trade show demo on-hand -- including a go using the very nice Classic Controller Pro, which is included in Japan's black system/game bundle -- we asked Capcom staff about two unsettled questions concerning the game's US release. The first was the matter of paying to play Monster Hunter Tri online, as the game eschews Nintendo's servers for Capcom-operated ones and is fee-based in Japan. We didn't receive a decisive answer, being told only that the publisher is "hoping" the game will be free to play in the US. We got a similar response when we wondered if Wii Speak support was 100% set for the domestic release -- Capcom's "hoping" to get it in, but couldn't promise anything.

The event did provide taste of what trying to coordinate a successful online monster hunt would be like without Wii Speak -- we found it nearly impossible to hear our fellow players (or the game) over the music being piped through the venue's formidable sound system.

Joystiq [Nintendo], November 17, 2009:
If you live in Boston or San Francisco and are curious enough about EA Sports Active to go into a retail store devoted entirely to the fitness game, you're in luck! And maybe you've also learned something about the amount of curiosity you have about EA Sports Active. On November 15, EA opened two EA Sports Active stores, featuring demo units of both Active and the new EA Sports Active: More Workouts, "Active Trainers" who will show attendees how to use the game, and even a supply of games to lend out to visitors so they can try it at home. The stores also take reservations for workout sessions. They'll be open until December 14.

EA invited some bloggers to the Boston location for a tour and a workout. Not us, but fitness bloggers. You know, the people that someone might listen to if they cared about being healthy. Luckily for us, those bloggers took plenty of pictures of the inside of the Boston store. If you'd like to visit, the addresses of the stores are posted after the break.

Joystiq [Nintendo], October 30, 2009:
Seems like these buy 2, get 1 free sales are all the rage these days, as Target has just announced it will be hosting one starting November 1. Unlike the recent sales from Amazon, Toys R Us and Best Buy, Target's sale applies only to Wii games, though it's worth noting that it does apply to all of them. As Wii games tend to be significantly cheaper than 360 and PS3 games, this might be a good deal for the early holiday shoppers out there.

Target is also offering a deal on Band Hero starting November 3 and running through next week. Those that pick up any version of the Band Hero bundle ($199) will get a free $20 gift card along with it. That should be just enough to buy supplies for the Taylor Swift party you will no doubt be forced to throw.

Rumor: Target circular advertises $199 WiiRumor: Target circular advertises $199 Wii

Joystiq [Nintendo], September 17, 2009:
The image above, posted by Kotaku, appears to be a Target ad for the week of September 27, featuring a $50 price drop on Wii hardware. This ad would further corroborate the Toys R Us ad we saw that also showed the same price cut -- if we knew either ad was real. Us? We're hoping for a drastic price cut on cameras so tipsters can get better pictures of these advance ads.

The DVD at the right side of the Target ad is Monsters vs. Aliens, which comes out on September 29. That at least shows that if this ad is a fake, it's a somewhat clever one. As always, we're not going to take this as confirmation of a price drop, but we will take it as confirmation that it would be smart to wait a couple of weeks before going to buy a Wii.

Patent found for a Wii horseback riding peripheralPatent found for a Wii horseback riding peripheral

Wii - QJ.NET, August 11, 2009: Those who think that the Wii Vitality Sensor is a pretty strange peripheral to have for video games probably haven't heard of the horseback riding peripheral. It's basically an inflatable with a pocket to affix the Wiimote in, and the player would have to ride (and yes, bounce on) it to get it to work. Getting the picture yet? Yeah, I laughed too.

The patent was found in a European patent database, which lists that the inflatable seat may also support riding other animals such as bulls, camels, elephants, burros, dolphins, whales and even fictional creatures like dragons, griffons, unicorns, giant eagles. Sticking the Wiimote into the slot provided will allow the Wiimote's accelerometers to work the inflatable seat's functions using the accelerometers.

As with all patent-spotting news, this one neither has release info nor images of the final product. We'll have to settle for the little sketches for now, and until (or if) Nintendo announces this one, you can try envisioning yourself bouncing shamelessly in front of your TV.

For now, there's the Vitality Sensor:

Wii - QJ.NET, July 29, 2009:

Punch-Out!! - Image 1

Punch-Out!! producer Ken Yeeloy has expressed a desire to develop a sequel to the cartoony Wii boxing game in a recent interview with Official Nintendo Magazine.

While the original Punch-Out!! for Wii established the game's deep connections with the NES original, Yeloy sees a possible sequel as a chance to further "evolve the franchise further and add some cool, new things."

Gameplay lead Bryce Halliday pointed out that things would definitely change in the sequel. "Cooperative, competitive multiplayer support or create-a-boss mode would be places to start but we'd need to come up with a new 'hook' like the motion controllers gave us in this iteration," he said.

Joystiq [Nintendo], July 28, 2009:

Sometimes it's better not to ask questions, which is the approach we're taking with GameStop's sale on several solid titles for $20 new -- and not GameStop's definition of "new," but actually new. The sale started today, for both online and stores, and goes until August 2. Highlights include:
  • Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360 and PS3)
  • FEAR 2: Project Origin (Xbox 360 and PS3)
  • Silent Hill Homecoming (Xbox 360)
  • MadWorld (Wii)
  • Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (Wii)
The full list and more nitpicking details about the sale can be found over at CAG. Although many of the titles make sense as part of the sale (Lair), the big question is: Why Street Fighter IV? Is Capcom planning to announce a Turbo Hyper Fighting Alpha Remix Championship Beefcake Easy-Bake Snuggie Edition?
