Joystiq [Nintendo], June 22, 2009:
During this weekend's World Hobby Fair, both Capcom and Nintendo had booths set up, showing off the new Wii colors and accessories. Capcom's booth had the Monster Hunter 3 bundles as part of its Monster Hunter display, and Nintendo had the blue Wiimote and Nunchuk, of course, to promote Wii Sports Resort -- which, incidentally, was also the inspiration behind a very nice set of giveaway items.

The Nunchuk has always been shiny on top and matte on bottom, but it's much more noticeable, and nice-looking, on the black version. Somehow, the Wiimote jacket also looks cool in matte black, despite being a Wiimote jacket. The Classic Controller Pro, as well, looks like much more of an upgrade in shiny black plastic. Head past the break to see the blue Wii Sports controllers.

Guy runs Windows 95 on Wii, wonders whyGuy runs Windows 95 on Wii, wonders why

Joystiq [Nintendo], May 26, 2009:

Using a Wii version of the open source DOS emulator DOSbox, a Wii homebrew devotee has managed to get Windows 95 running on the console -- if your definition of "running" is "working, but just barely." In fact, the boot process spans most of two YouTube videos, which the author admits have been edited for brevity. (It takes upwards of 13 minutes just to see the taskbar.)

You're probably asking yourself, "What's the point?" and "Why even try?" Well, to prove it can be done, of course. But even the one who did it -- while providing instructions on how to replicate the process -- advises against following in his footsteps, saying, "I did it and now I can move on to more productive things." But, hey, you could be doing worse things with the system. Waste your time with videos of Wiindows 95 in sort-of action after the break!

Wii - QJ.NET, April 29, 2009: Red Steel 2 - Image 1Head's up. Ubisoft has officially announced Red Steel 2, Ubisoft's first crack at the Wii MotionPlus. When it comes out, you'll be able to enjoy the gun-trotting, katana-hacking action of the game using the shiny new peripheral.

So says Tony Key, senior VP of sales and marketing at Ubisoft:

Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console.

Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration

The image reminds me a lot of Afro Samurai, and having the revolver hanging on a katana really suggests the Afro Samurai look. Anyway, Red Steel 2 is currently set to be released on the holidays later this year.

Wii - QJ.NET, March 25, 2009:

GDC: Iwata Live Blog - Image 1

The latest out of GDC is from none other than Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who has no need for humility as he announces that the Wii is the fastest-selling game console in history, having officially shipped 50 million consoles worldwide.

But who cares about that. Old news. Moving on. You'll care more about the new Zelda game that was announced, as well as the firmware update that they issued as an answer to the Wii storage problem.

The new Zelda game is coming to the Nintendo DS later this year, and is titled The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Reports say that its visual style is similar to The Phantom Hourglass. A trailer was shown during the event but we don't have an embeddable version out yet... so just use your imaginations?

As for the Wii storage solution, Nintendo will be issuing Wii Menu 4.0, which will feature the SD Card Menu. This will lift the 2 GB mem card cap and will allow higher capacity cards. Games can be downloaded and launched straight from the SD card without going through the Wii System Memory. The update will be available today. Finally, eh?

That's it. Toodles.

UPDATE Whoops, that's not it. Nintendo has just released the official debut trailer of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. And it looks like they meant "tracks" literally. Gameplay will include trains. Yes, trains. Yes, that's what I said. Just watch it why don't you.

Joystiq [Nintendo], March 16, 2009:

Yeah, yeah, it's a little late in the day to be mentioning Amazon's Deal of the Day, but the online retailer is currently vending the full Guitar Hero World Tour bundle on current-gen consoles for $120 -- that's $70 off. The pack includes the game, mic, guitar and drums.

If you were considering picking up the GHWT drums as a standalone package, this might actually be a solid alternative deal, as the drums alone retail for $100 (with free shipping and likely tax free). If you have any questions about the game's peripherals working with your other rhythm titles, be sure to check out our Instrument Compatibility Matrix.

Joystiq [Nintendo], March 15, 2009:
Platinum Games' well received MadWorld has been abusing and roughing up the Wii for few days and SEGA decided its the opportune time to give game advice. Only because the publisher wants to make sure everyone is getting the most brutal experience possible.

The top ten MadWorld must-do list is what SEGA came up with and is (interestingly enough) penned by the company's own senior localization producer, Patrick Riley. The list includes a few gameplay tips, some Challenge tricks and various insightful nuggets of information, like the fact that Jack can impale foes with a total of five, yes five caution signs. Yes sir ... the more you know.

Joystiq [Nintendo], March 6, 2009:
In an interview with IGN, Vicarious Visions confirmed that the new DS Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits will not be compatible with the DSi. "Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits was developed prior to the Nintendo DSi release and supports the more than 27 million DS Units that have already been sold in North America," Vicarious's David Nathanielsz said. "The game requires a GBA slot - either on the original Nintendo DS or the Nintendo DSLite - to play." Surprise! Of course, the team is looking into DSi compatibility and is "very excited about the possibilities open to us in the future."

In less obvious news, IGN posted the "preliminary" tracklist for the third DS Guitar Hero, which now features a nonlinear "fan request" based progression. 12 of the game's 25+ tracks were revealed, in addition to Sum 41's "Still Waiting," Franz Ferdinand's "The Fallen," and Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer," revealed by the ESRB.

A Boy and His Blob getting remake for the WiiA Boy and His Blob getting remake for the Wii

Wii - QJ.NET, March 5, 2009: a boy and his blob - Image 1Those of you who are unfortunate enough to be too young to know this game will have a chance to redeem themselves.

The classic 1989 game, A Boy and His Blob, is getting a remake for the Wii in celebration of the game's%20th anniversary. The studio who took up the task of making the remake is Majesco Entertainment, the studio behind Cooking Mama and Psychonauts.

Majesco tried to resurrect the game before for the DS, but that project was canceled due to financial trouble for the studio. It may be for the best though, since the Wii remake sounds way better. According to the press release, the Wii remake will feature "groundbreaking hand drawn and painted animation technology, the all-new presentation provides a polished, cinematic feel."

In case you didn't guess yet, A Boy and His Blob is about a story about... a boy and his blob. The blob, named Blobert, has the odd ability of being able to transform into various objects depending on what kind of jellybean you feed him. He can turn into a ladder if you feed him a licorice jelly bean, for instance. Together, they have to travel to Blobert's planet of Blobolonia to defeat the evil emperor. Oooooh.

Wii - QJ.NET, March 5, 2009:

PR - The Beatles: Rock Band Worldwide Release Set for 9/9/09 - Image 1

We finally have a solid release date for the Rock Band game starring the band that rocked the world, The Beatles. The game is slated for a release on September 9, released simultaneously worldwide for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Wii.

The Beatles: Rock Band will come in three flavors, depending on the hardware you want to buy. Here are your choices:
  • Limited Edition Premium Bundle (US 249.99) will allow fans to pick up the guitar, bass, mic or drums and experience The Beatles extraordinary catalogue of music through gameplay that takes players on a journey through the legacy and evolution of the band s legendary career.
  • Standalone Guitars Edition (US 99.99) will offer a limited number of new hardware offerings modeled after instruments used by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr throughout their career.
  • Software Edition (US 59.99)  will be offered as standalone software and hardware as well as a limited edition bundle. The game will be compatible with all Rock Band instrument controllers and other current music-based video game peripherals.
Unfortunately, the press release didn't include a song list, but I'm hoping it'll have Yellow Submarine in there.

Another gush of a boy and his blob assets has been released, this time in the form of gameplay footage. After serving up a few screenshots that had us swooning for more, two direct-feed videos are available from IGN. If the style and polish of the screenshots blew your top off, tape down a shirt and check out this impressive (and beautiful) gameplay footage. You can check out a boy (and his blob) navigating through the world -- using tactics we still recall from our childhood -- after the break.
